Making Carnival Masks out of Paper Bags with the Kids

22 February 2015
Who said paper bags are only good for fruit, veggies or recycling?

Paper bags you say? Yes, those little brown bags you put your fruit in at the produce department, or those ones you get when you buy a fresh loaf of bread. Don’t recycle them this month! Reuse them to make economical and environmental Carnival masks for your masquerade party! These masks are durable and best of all, you can make them look any way you want! Jim Carrey, eat your heart out!

Materials
paper bags
colorful construction paper
stickers
markers
scissors
ribbons
glitter
feathers
pencils
glue

To start off, put the bag on your head and using a pencil, mark where your eyes, nose and mouth are. Cut out those parts so you can see and breathe properly. Next, decorate your mask however you like! If you can imagine it, you can be it! Maybe you want to be a forest nymph. If so decorate your mask with glitter, twigs and leaves. Or maybe you’d like to be an exotic bird. Glue on colorful feathers and make a beak out of orange construction paper! Or maybe you want to be a fox. Well then you’ll need lots of orange construction paper for the fur and the ears! The possibilities are endless.
