It's blue, Blue Monday

Since 2005, the third Monday of January, called Blue Monday, is considered to be the more depressing day of the whole year! The idea was based in calculation involving factors such as weather conditions and debt levels. However, while it had not basis in science, the idea caught on and now many of us dread it. Fear not though, we are here to give you ways to beat those Blue Monday blues!

See the light!

Natural light helps stabilize serotonin and triggers endorphin, both mood-boosting hormones. While at work, get outside for at least ten minutes today.

Move that body

Walking, jogging, swimming, cycling and similar activities boost endorphins, which interact with receptors in your brain to reduce pain and can even trigger a positive feeling in your body similar to morphine.

Smile

When you smile, you release a cascade of feel-good chemicals in your brain. Your body relaxes, and blood pressure may be lowered. Smiling is contagious, too, so if you smile at others you’ll help them feel better as well.

Be grateful

Recent research has shown that when you take time to appreciate what you already have, you’ll feel more energetic and optimistic. Make a list of things you’re grateful for and people you’re grateful you know.

Practice altruism

There’s a growing body of research that links altruistic behavior with improved health and a greater sense of wellbeing. Offer someone a genuine compliment, and/or make a contribution to a charity.

Get Creative

Recent studies suggest a link between creativity and depression. Creative people tend to get depressed more, but they can also harness their depression into something positive. So, when you're feeling at your lowest, you might want to consider getting out of your head and putting pen to paper, painting, playing music, or participating in whatever creative pursuit lifts your spirits.

Give Yourself a Break

Take some time to pamper yourself. Get a massage, take a long hot bath, read a good book, and relax.
